MPEG and Pools

The Moving Picture Experts Group (MPEG) is a working group of experts that was formed by ISO and IEC to set standards for audio and video compression and transmission. Wikipedia

This is an unfortunate turn of events that an expert witness has the opportunity to conflate two orthogonal aspects of MPEG. The Experts Group which gave MPEG its name, came first. They are the engineers, technical people setting the standards. MPEG-LA came later, usurped the name and hoovered up any loose patents involved. MPEG-LA are parasitising the name and causing confusion. They are a post facto group formed solely for the purpose of monetizing the patents used by the technical processes. They have no technical expertise or input to standards setting.

Let us hope that the court was enlightened by the "discussion" and is well aware of the difference.
