And the whole point of Midway was to destroy the American Aircraft Carriers. At
which point, the Japanese Navy would be free to call the Pacific "Mare
Nostrum" and take islands (and even attack the Continental US) as they
pleased.

However, as we all know, it didn't quite pan out. As the Oracle said "A
fleet will be destroyed". It just turned out that it was the Japanese
Carrier Fleet got destroyed, not the American.

And unlike the US, Japan did not have the ability to replace them.
