We have the same sort of problem ...
At the end of the day, you need to hold the emergency services liable if they
cause an accident. But you also need to accept that time is of the essence. The
laws in the UK have changed recently, possibly for the worse.
This was all covered in a documentary recently, and it gave a couple of tragic
examples where by-standers were seriously injured or killed. One example - a
fire-engine jumped the lights (not even doing it in the "approved"
emergency way). It hit a car full of people, killing one, and the driver wasn't
censured in any way. Not good. Jumping red lights at speed is STUPID STUPID
STUPID.
The trouble is, you don't want to ban emergency vehicles from jumping lights!
imho they should simply say that emergency drivers on twos-and-blues can only be
charged with dangerous or reckless driving, but any other offences will be taken
into consideration with that charge.
Cheers,
