Reminds me of an anecdote about a US researcher and a German rocket scientist
brought to the US under the "Operation Paper Clip" (the one that brought us von
Braun). The Germans used very strong Hydrogen Peroxide
(H2O2) called by them "sauerstoff", perhaps a code name,
and they thought they had a monopoly on anything of that purity. It was used as
the oxidizer in the German V-2 rocket program. The story goes that the
German was given a tour of a US research facility, and was taken to a lab where
he was shown what was claimed to be some high-purity Hydrogen Peroxide. He was
very skeptical of the claim, and stuck his finger in an open container of the
liquid. It violently bubbled, and the German quickly withdrew a very bleached
finger. "Ja, ist sauerstoff", he said.
For the ear, stick with the
drugstore stuff.
