How 'bout some kind to Near Field to Ethernet adapter?
The population would have to be pretty dense before NF
signals start to interfere with each other :)

I gather these adaptors aren't uncommon?
The trouble with eg my wife's Nexus 7 is I gather you have to root it to use the
USB port as a host ...

I'm surprised you didn't mention the one obvious advantage of
an ethernet connection, that it's an order of magnitude more difficult
to sniff traffic in a physical wire. I can also imagine the network guys
flat out refusing to carry patch cables with the new plug, thus
mandating lusers carry their own USB adaptor. I've used one,
it "just worked" on MacOS (not iOS). I shudder to think of the
driver circus for the different brands on Windows...
