Sorry, but that's still nonsense. The authenticator doesn't have anything to do
with your computer's security - it's to do with blizzard account security.
An authenticator (the software ones are a little different) is a small hardware
token - a RSA SecurID key that periodically generates a 6 digit random number
based off the current time and a secret seed and displays it on a small screen.
Agreed so far?
That token is (optionally) used in the login process to authenticate you to
blizzard (note: NOT blizzard to you) - if an authenticator is attached to an
account their login system will also prompt you for the current code. Again,
the authenticator is *not* used to authenticate blizzard to you.
The reason they got introduced is that both blizzards account security has been
pretty bad and that targetted attacks on blizzard accounts are quite common
because there's a real $$ market for ingame currency etc that can be harvested
from compromised accounts.
Attaching an authenticator *in no way* mitigates the computer security hole that
is warden etc. They're totally seperate issues. Yeah warden is a hole, but
authenticators have *absolutely nothing to do with that either way*.[ Reply to This | Parent | # ]
