To make the text more readable, perhaps?
Editing, summarising and and setting headlines
is a lot about making things easier to understand,
and I think Groklaw generally does a wonderful
job with that. It's not like the text of the
order was changed - it's still there, prominently
quoted in its entirety for everyone to read.

Besides, "atypical" and "not typical" are exact
synonyms, aren't they? Or does my non-native
reading gloss over some subtle difference here?

From personal experience in the US, "atypical" is commonly
misread to mean something akin to "super typical" or "exactly
alike."
