The lawyer can advise but the hirer may be deaf to that advice. On the other
hand, I have heard it said that corporation pay lawyers to tell them what they
want to hear. I suspect that in this case the local lawyers were overruled by
corporate HQ. That may be what was behind the judge's doubts about
'instructions'.
