It cost them $368.2m!

BBC

One for the Newspicks, or even an article?

The sum is about half the amount VirnetX had originally demanded and will only cause a small dent in the iPhone-maker's strong balance sheet.

But the ruling could have more serious consequences if VirnetX carries out a threat to block the further use of its innovations in Apple's products.
It gets better:
But the verdict will boost a related claim filed by VirnetX with the US's International Trade Commission which could theoretically lead to a sales ban on Apple products that infringe its technology.
Hopefully there will be a sales ban, which will annoy so many people that it will lead to the elected government doing something about software patents, preferably the simplest thing, which is to get rid of them entirely.

Apple losing in the market
Authored by: SpaceLifeForm on Wednesday, November 07 2012 @ 01:10 PM EST
Not unexpected. People are waking up and
realizing that iPhones and iPads are overpriced.

Apple can see the writing on the wall and are
desparate, hence the insane lawsuits.

Who are Virnetx?

Oh, I've looked them up, and the case was discussed here before. There's a suggestion that they might not be the exclusive owners of the patents in suit. Something in their case against Microsoft must have prompted this posting in Investorvillage 6/26/2010 . CNBC's MarketInsider was not convinced of their value in July this year.

Virnetx themselves freely admit Our portfolio of intellectual property is the foundation of our business model. They list current licensees as Microsoft May 2010 ,   Aastra May 2012 ,   Mitel July 2012 , and NEC August 2012. According to Bloomberg's numbers Virnetx is currently on negative earnings, and they earned $36,000 royalties revenue first half this year. I'd like some confirmation that figure is only 36E3. It doesn't look enought to satisfy their listed board and executive management team.

How VirnetX Will Profit From Next-Gen Networks is a 96pp pdf with more tech than your usual PR puffery. They list physical offices at Zephyr   Cove , Nevada
