My question is meant to get people thinking about what Apple wants for it's
patents vs what it's willing to pay!
Apple is willing to pay - at most -
$1 per smartphone. However, there's lots of references like this
article:
Apple offered to license its portfolio of patents to
Samsung provided the Korean company was willing to pay on the order of $30
per smartphone and $40 per tablet.
So Apple wants to charge
$30 per smartphone but only pay $1 per smartphone. And they don't want
anyone actually valuing the patents - they just want a friendly Court to declare
Motorola can only charge (at most) $1 per smartphone. They want Motorola to
be held to such a decision by the Court but if the Court goes above $1 per
smartphone Apple has made clear they won't abide by the Court's decision
themselves.
So an essential patent for the product is only worth $1.
But a patent on "rectangle with rounded corners" is worth $30.
