Valve: Linux is more viable than Windows 8 for gaming
Authored by: kuroshima on Friday, November 02 2012 @ 06:54 PM EDT
I'm not proposing that the devs actually target WinE. What
I'm saying is that one option for Steam would be to include
the relevant, tested WinE configuration, for those games
that already work on WinE, through the use of something
similar to PlayOnLinux scripts. Depending on the game, it
can be less work than creating a native game while still
offering 90% of the benefits. The developers can certainly
see where the issues are, and are probably better at finding
the right things to tweak to get WinE working. Again, this
should be seen only as a temporary solution, and probably
advertised when downloading the game "Linux support for this
game is experimental, and offered through WinE".

Oh, and imagine the boost WinE would get if Valve game them
a hand! In the end, it would benefit everybody

I have used PlayOnLinux, and it definitively makes setting
and using WinEPrefixes easier. The built in scripts can be a
lot of help, and they're basically shell scripts. I can
tweak my WinE vis command line and configuration files no
problem, but this should be made as painless as possible,
and WinE, by itself, is everything but painless.
