"Apple's brand is being ruined"
Authored by: Anonymous on Friday, November 02 2012 @ 03:52 PM EDT
I remember. Apple believes they are entitled to everything they steal from
everyone else.

The surely package things uniquely. They enhance their booty, perhaps, but none
of it is completely original. (actually very little that makes it to consumers
is truly original, most came from imaginations of TV and movie creative visions
of the future).

While there is a certain amount of what you are talking
about, it isn't the "Apple's brand is being ruined" comments.
Those ones are about how there general public image is taking
a hit with all the anti apple lawsuit news articles.

Don't call it "Steve's Legacy"
Authored by: xtifr on Friday, November 02 2012 @ 04:48 PM EDT

Remember that there were two Steves involved with founding Apple. And no, Apple hasn't always been that way. Before the other Steve left, they were remarkably open. To say that they've always been that way, or to blame it on an unspecified "Steve", is to insult Steve Wozniak's legacy. Woz was (and possibly still is) a first-rate, stand-up individual whom I greatly admire. Insult Jobs all you want, and I'll never disagree with you. But please be more specific when you say "Steve"! :)

Traces of Woz's legacy can still be seen in Apple's current PC division, where they turned around and embraced a high level of openness after years of operating purely Jobs-style. It's their portable device divisions which seem to have fully embraced the dark side*, aka Jobs' legacy.

* Amusingly, my first ever Internet email address was ...!apple!darkside!xtifr, although the "darkside" element was just a BBS, named after a Pink Floyd album, and not a division of Apple. They exchanged UUCP mail with Apple. :)

Always been this way?
Authored by: Anonymous on Friday, November 02 2012 @ 05:08 PM EDT
The first computer I ever got in front of was an Apple II.

No GUI; there were three possible command line prompts:

] AppleSoft Basic. Ready for you to program.

> Integer Basic. Ready for you to program.

* Apple Assembler. Ready for you to program.

I've never seen an iPhone ready to do whatever I wanted. It just gives me a set
of options that were popular "survey says...!" choices.

Sitting in front of an Apple II, I was able - even expected - to do something
original. I find the lack of that ability a serious failure in all
"smartphones", even most desktop OSes; but most particularly Apple
because it feels like being kicked out of the place where I grew up.

The Who could have said it well

To adjust a line by The Who:

Meet the new Apple, same as the old Apple.
