No, not the parent, but the obnoxious mail app, usually LookOut,
that beeped, dinged or sang a little ditty at each incoming message.
If Mr Allen and his friends think that a waving toreador's cape in
the corner of my screen isn't as obtrusive, then I have a box of
dancing paperclips he might enjoy.

The idea that a visual notification might be less obtrusive than a sound
may have some attraction to the corporate environment. I had sympathy
for the cubicle slaves whenever I had to go to that part of the building,
and hear their PCs chiming away like a mad clock shop.

Maybe I'm too old. I was brought up in a rural area where there was
a time of day you went down to the mailbox to see if anything had
been delivered today. I still carry that attitude. It's my computer,
my workflow, I'll check the status of my running apps when -I- want.
Now, as for those "Help, I can't do that" messages, well they
shouldn't be there in the first place.

unobtrusive, distracting
Authored by: Gringo_ on Wednesday, October 31 2012 @ 07:45 AM EDT

My ESET anti-virus pops up a little "unobtrusive" status message in the lower right corner of the sceen every time it downloads a new virus definition, almost hourly. However, there is some kind of flaw in this latest version I installed a couple of months ago. When that little message pops up, it takes the focus, and suddenly if I am typing into an edit box on a web page or even email in Thunderbird the text does not arrive at its destination. I can type a whole sentence or two during that brief interval, and if I am not watching I will discover that what I just typed never arrived. So incredibly annoying! I need to take a moment to learn how to turn off those status messages and report the bug to ESET, something I never get around to.

But then the right-wing expert comes on and sez:Whaddya mean, obtrusive! NOTHING is Obtrusive!

There's no accounting for taste, and there's no accounting for what is or is
not obtrusive, either!

What! You killed my background with pictures of my family (or beautiful
West Virginia) for THIS!
Or, for exactly the same situation,
It's just a quick Groklaw post, from a public terminal, so what?
