I remember when he recruited John Sculley to be CEO he had already set his
heights much higher. According to Wikipedia:

'Apple lured Sculley away from Pepsi because Apple wanted Sculley to apply his
marketing skills to the personal computer market. Steve Jobs successfully sealed
the deal after he made his legendary pitch to John: "Do you want to sell
sugared water for the rest of your life? Or do you want to come with me and
change the world?"'

The thermonuclear remark is an indicator that perhaps he had
decided that if he wasn't going to be around to experience it,
he didn't care how bad it got ...

Unfortunately Steve Jobs instigated the current "focus", and the Company is merely fulfilling that directive.
What happens if a surfer riding the crest of a giant wave is leaving his place on the board to a less skilled successor?

Jobs knew just what he could get away with and how, and how to deal with things getting out of control.

His successors don't. Yes, Jobs is responsible for the current focus, but he could make it work.

The current company leaders need to pull their head out of his legacy and focus on things they can make work rather than things they imagine Jobs would have been able to pull off.
