On
inchieste.repubblica.it there is a transcript (and original audio) of the
tape of Bertolaso speaking on March 30, 2009, at 15:38.
Dr. Bertolaso was the
head of Italy’s Civil Protection Department. He was also present at the press
conference mentioned in the original where reassurances were given that there
was no increased risk of an earthquake. He was one of the people convicted in
the recent case.
In the tape he appears to agree that the meeting of
scientists will be a sham arranged for the benefit of the
press:
In modo che è più un'operazione mediatica, hai
capito?
"As a media operation, do you understand?"
Così loro, che sono i massimi esperti di terremoti, diranno: è
una situazione normale
"They [the experts who will be invited
to the meeting], who are the greatest experts of our country, will say: the
situation is normal"
Please note; to be clear; I am making my case here.
If you do not fully trust anonymous voices on the internet or you want to make
the other side's case make sure you read the whole transcript or better, listen
to the audio yourself and write a hand-translated transcript for
us.
The conviction of Bertolaso kind of satisfies PJ's request: "Then
prosecute the non scientist, if he's the one responsible for garbling the
message."
There's another thing; two of the seismologists, Enzo Boschi and
Franco Barberi seem to have wanted to warn specifically about additional risks
in Abruzzo but that press conference seems to have been abandoned by themselves
or blocked by Bertolaso. If it's true that Bertolaso explicitly blocked such
communication then I do not yet understand any reason why those people could be
convicted.
There's another English language source of interest in Scientific American's Guest Blog on the earthquake. [ Reply to This | Parent | # ]
