Apple doesn't want to keep up.
They know they have reached the point or soon will, that the only people buying
Apple products will be cult members.
The ones that won't consider any other brand.
They need "innovation" to make these people update their hardware
annually.
Take a look at the new iPad mini for example, priced right, about $100 over the
current market, relatively low resolution, outdated display proportions, no
phone to start with.
So there you go, you have an item that can be replaced with a new version for at
least 2 years, maybe more. Over that time the "innovation" will be
based on what is technology available currently from competitors.
Two years down the road, rinse and repeat.
Apple died with Steve Jobs, what we now have is iZombie Apple, surviving only by
feeding their brains to captive lawyers.
