Back in the day the RIAA succeeded in getting a mandatory
"Do Not Copy" bit in the DAT frame format for Digital Audio Tape
machines sold in the US. Marketing and manufacturing being what it is
the bit was set for worldwide sales. Some manufacturers allowed
a means of turning it off for "Professional Use". Back then SOC and
custom chips took a lot longer and were more expensive, and it was
some six months IIRC before a black box came from Hong Kong
to strip the DNC bit from the datastream.
Fast Forward to 2012, Apple have a waiting list of 2 - 3 weeks for
their official Lightning(TM) adapters. Unofficial third party devices
are on the shelves in east Asia at one third of Apple's price.

I strongly suspect that if Apple refused to honour the warranty due to third
party peripherals, then Trading Standards would get rather interested ...:-)
