"It was a shock to hear that if Facebook hadn’t worked out, Zuckerberg
would have joined a tech giant, rather than a startup. "
Why was it a shock? Zuckerberg seems to make decisions rational for himself and
starting job search with "I'm going to work in startup and nowhere
else" is not one of them.[ Reply to This | Parent | # ]

The land in West Oakland where Eric Maundu is
trying to farm
is
covered with freeways, roads, light rail and parking lots
so there's not much
arable land and the soil is
contaminated.
So Maundu doesn't use soil.
Instead he's
growing plants using fish and circulating water.
It's called
aquaponics- a gardening system that combines
hydroponics (water-based planting)
and aquaculture (fish
farming). It's been hailed as the future of farming: it
uses
less water (up to 90% less than traditional gardening),
doesn't attract
soil-based bugs and produces two types of
produce (both plants and
fish).
Aquaponics has become popular in recent years among urban
gardeners
and DIY tinkerers, but Maundu- who is trained in
industrial robotics- has taken
the agricultural craft one
step further and made his gardens smart.
Using
sensors (to
detect water level, pH and temperature), microprocessors
(mostly
the open-source Arduino microcontroller), relay
cards, clouds and social media
networks (Twitter and
Facebook), Maundu has programmed his gardens to tweet
when
there's a problem (e.g. not enough water) or when there's
news (e.g. an
over-abundance of food to share).

TED talk, only
better.

Where is PolR's part 2?
- and what about effort to file something that
makes sense
with the CLS Bank
International v. Alice
Corporation appeals court where they are not
allowing
an en banc review to move forward (what is the deadline for
anyone to
hire a lawyer in order to file something)?
See:
http://groklawstatic.ibiblio.org/article.php%3fstory=20121013192858600
Is anyone
planning to file amicus brief at the appeals court
using PolR's stuff?
If the problem is money to hire a
lawyer, then maybe we could raise money
somehow at Groklaw
to hire a lawyer to file for all of us? [ Reply to This | Parent | # ]

Link That is excellent news but there is still a
binary blob to be downloaded to the graphics controller. Maybe Broadcom will get
around to freeing that too, then RMS, and others whose uncompromising stance is
if considerable value, should have no objection to the Pi. I agree that his
opinion is valid, and differ only in that sheer weight of numbers using the best
that can be achieved right now will pressure manfacturers into releasing source
more than a few highly principled people refusing to use it until they have
total freedom. In the battle, both methods may result in advances, so both are
correct. Broadcom may have problems in releasing the source of the blob, as it
may involve "IP" they have licensed from others, but I do hope that they can and
will be able to. [ Reply to This | Parent | # ]

There is a TechCrunch article
this morning
entitled: "Apple Vs. Samsung: Another Blow For Apple As
Dutch
Court Rules Samsung Does Not Infringe Multitouch
Patent".
Another loss for Apple in the courts: a Dutch
court in the Hague has ruled Samsung does not infringe an
Apple multitouch
patent, Reuters is reporting. Apple had
argued last month in the court that
Samsung infringed its
patent on multi-touch function, according to the news
agency. “With these products Samsung does not infringe the
claims that Apple
has made,” the latest court ruling said.

While methane comprises less than 1% of Mars’
atmosphere, there
is nonetheless a lot of methane in Mars’
air. Malynda Chizek, a graduate
student in astronomy at New
Mexico State University, uses a colorful image to
describe
to phys.org how much methane seems to be present. In order
to produce
the quantity of methane that MGS and other
devices have observed, Chizek says
that five million cows
would have to generate 200,000 tons of methane per
year.
That was
the best of many articles I found on this
topic. Space.com
has a a
video,
featuring an interview with the principal NASA scientist for
the
mission's laboratory, speaking on the topic..
We have been hearing
tantalizing hints about methane on
Mars for quite some time now. What is so
exciting about that
is that methane could be an indication of biological
activity. [ Reply to This | Parent | # ]

In a town a few km down the road there is a little business with the storefront
name "Google.net" in Google's standard colours and font. It's been
there since early 2008 or a bit longer.
It is an internet cafe without any food.
If you think that was cheesy, I looked sideways while waiting at some traffic
lights today and saw over the top of the traffic a small phone shop with the
name macberry. The logo was a stylized M, all curves with the apple leaf in
place over the apple shaped top of the M and two inverted teardrop shapes
forming the legs of the M. The Blackberry foot print filling a bite out of the
right hand side of the apple. The apple is has a thin black border The fill
colour is a blended rainbow pattern green at the top with yellow, red then blue
at the bottom. The berry print is white on a black circle with a thin black
circular line around the black background of the berry print which is not quite
the trademark shape. All on a white field.

As a warning for those who are normally quick to upgrade to the
latest stable vanilla kernel releases, a serious EXT4 data corruption bug worked
its way into the stable Linux 3.4, 3.5, and 3.6 kernel
series.

The European
Union has charged Microsoft with an antitrust violation, saying that it did not
live up to the terms of its 2009 deal with the 27-nation bloc.
Joaquín
Almunia, the European Union antitrust commissioner, told reporters in Brussels
on Wednesday that the American software giant has not taken adequate steps to
abide by a previous agreement that enables Windows users to choose which
Internet browser to use, rather than automatically defaulting to Internet
Explorer.
