Well, you'd have to run the fibre at 10 Mb, unless you had some circuitry, such
as a bridge, to isolate the 2 segments. Vampire taps didn't do that by
themselves. Beyond that, there's no reason why fibre couldn't be used. Another
consideration with the coax and hub based network was maximum network size. The
furthest point on the network had to be within the round trip time of the 1st 64
bytes (256 bits) of the frame, for the collision detection process to work
properly. With switches and full duplex operation, that's no longer an issue
and network segment can be as long as you can properly propagate the signal.
That's about 100 M (330') with twisted pair, but almost unlimited with fibre.
