It's not unusual for language to "fossilize" old technology,
especially with the speed at which that tech is currently changing.
People still call video "footage" -- which originally referred to the
length of a celluloid strip required to record the still images making up the
moving image.
People still say they "dial" a number, when phones haven't commonly
had dials in decades.
Similarly, the "boob tube" is no longer a cathode-ray tube,
"taping" a conversation doesn't involve magnetic tape,
"filming" something doesn't involve film, etc....

Isn't ethernet the physical layer? There's no reason why we can't connect a 1Gb
fibre-optic to a 10Mb vampire tap - apart from the likely screams from the users
as throughput collapses ;-)
