Raspberry Pi opens its ARM graphics code
Authored by: ailuromancy on Wednesday, October 24 2012 @ 12:02 PM EDT

I doubt that Broadcom could release source code for the entire GPU binary blob because parts of it are covered by software patents they do not control.

It would be much easier to publish some documentation for the GPU. The source code for the graphics stubs and wrappers is a large step in the right direction. I hope they decide to go further along the path to completely programmable hardware.

Raspberry Pi opens its ARM graphics code

I still plan on reviewing it myself, but 'Lee Dowling' commented on The
Register's comment section that it has very little functional code. It's almost
all simple wrappers around procedure calls to the GPU. The largest part is a
binary blob that's firmware for the GPU.

If that's an accurate assessment, it's much less useful than people expected.
It doesn't provide a path for second parties to improve performance. It
provides a mechanism to potentially work around bugs, but not a way to identify
and fix them.
