Lubuntu here
Authored by: Anonymous on Sunday, October 21 2012 @ 05:59 AM EDT
11.10 on that machine over there.
Now investigating what to replace it with.
Will try Debian Wheezy as soon as I get to a decent connection.
On an external hard drive first.
Squeeze installer crashed.
Debian (with Gnome 2) seems to be much less a memory hog than Lubuntu.
Which makes me wonder.

upgraded a few weeks ago to Xubuntu 12.04 and except for the usual issues with
VMWare everything worked like a champ. I never upgrade less than 4 months after
a few version is released to have them fix the bugs first. This also helped with
the usual VMWare debacle as the fix was already available and the second link in
google fixed it.

I was a big fan of KDE until they decided to go the 4.x route. That's when I
changed from CentOS to Xubuntu with the only other potential option Lubuntu. To
me XFCE is a good successor of KDE3.5.

It's Ubuntu, but with a real, properly integrated desktop.

However, Most People Prefer Unity Over XFCE or Mint
Authored by: Anonymous on Monday, October 22 2012 @ 02:23 AM EDT

Some people happen to like XFCE, and they're welcome to use it. A few also like Linux Mint. However, most users seem to prefer Ubuntu Unity. Here's some actual web stats from a major site (Wikipedia):

Top 6 Linux Desktops by Wikipedia Traffic September 2012

  1. Ubuntu - 90.61%
  2. Fedora - 3.02%
  3. SUSE - 1.83%
  4. Debian - 1.04%
  5. Mint - 0.92%
  6. Mandriva - 0.87%

Ubuntu vs. Kubuntu vs. Xubuntu September 2012

  1. Ubuntu - 90.61%
  2. Kubuntu - 0.37%
  3. Xubuntu - 0.0025%

The stats show that for every Xubuntu user, there are roughly 35,000 Ubuntu users.

If you look at the relative stats over one year (October 2011 to September 2012), you also see the following trends:

  • Xubuntu traffic stayed level over the course of a year. However, the value seems to be a minimum default which is used when the traffic levels are very small (the same value is used for a number of other minor distros).
  • Mint traffic peaked in November of 2011, but then steadily declined to less than half that level, where it seems to have stabilized.
  • Ubuntu traffic doubled during the first 6 months, at which point it appeared to stabilize. The increase followed the introduction of Unity.
  • Ubuntu was the only distro to show any significant traffic increase over the past year. Many distros actually experienced a decline in use.

The Wikipedia traffic data is available to anyone who wants to analyze it. Ubuntu is by far the most popular desktop distro, and it has become even more popular over the past year. It's pretty easy to understand why if you've every used it. Unity is fast, simple, and easy to use. I know that some people like to be able to "mod" their desktop so that it looks like something out of a science fiction movie, and you can't do that with Unity. However, I don't like to customize my computer beyond changing the wallpaper and installing some extra packages. I just want to use my computer to get work done writing software, and Unity lets me do that. Most computer users feel the same way.

A few people like to "hot rod" their computer, and for them something like XFCE or Enlightenment might be a better choice. That's why we have choices available. However, they shouldn't mistake their own hobbies as being something that appeals to the average user.
