I am in the process of getting that problem solved for myself. The recipe
follows, I'll report when fully cooked.
(1) Get a VM in the Cloud. I got a Rackspace for $16/month.
(2) Set up OpenVPN on it. Use your own keys; nobody but you has to be
involved.
(3) Set it up so that, on your Client, once a VPN connection is activated, all
traffic uses it.
Optional steps:
(4) Set up IMAP (I use Dovecot) and Postfix so you have a direct presence on the
Mail Server world. You may need to upgrade to the next level of VM, I don't
know yet if all of that will run in a 256M VM.
VoilĂ .
Once set up with (1)-(3), all your ISP sees is encrypted UDP traffic to your
Rackspace box.
Eventually I want to add LDAP and a minimal Postgres (required by Davical) so I
can have our Droids, my wife's laptop, etc. share credentials and mailboxes.
