Display expert, Microsoft Surface RT
Authored by: Anonymous on Thursday, October 18 2012 @ 11:05 PM EDT
It should be obvious that the display on the Microsoft Surface is
"sharper" than that on the iPads referenced.

The corners are not as rounded!

Australian review of innovation patents
Authored by: Anonymous on Friday, October 19 2012 @ 12:59 AM EDT
Probably old news but just came across this article which references a call for public comments on innovation (and design?) patents.

Is it worth submitting some comments?

What would be the sorts of well reasoned arguments one could put forward to highlight the error of even having innovation and design patents?

Apple loses tablet copyright appeal against Samsung
Authored by: Anonymous on Friday, October 19 2012 @ 07:53 AM EDT
"end of the line" ? Heh, will see about that. Until there's no time
left, I wouldn't count out another appeal.

Minnesota Gives Coursera the Boot, Citing a Decades-Old Law
Authored by: JamesK on Friday, October 19 2012 @ 03:33 PM EDT
So, they apply a law to something that wasn't even around when the law was
passed. How many other online courses are around that violate this law? How
can the state enforce something like that, without violating federal
telecommunications law? Does the same law apply if it was a correspondence
course via mail?

BTW, I'm currently taking a Python course through Coursera/University of
Toronto.

Mobile phones can cause brain tumours, [Italian] court rules.
Authored by: JamesK on Friday, October 19 2012 @ 10:02 PM EDT
Well, I wonder what they used for evidence. That is something that's been
studied for many years and this is the first I've heard that cell phones cause
tumors. It takes ionizing radiation to cause cancer, but ionizing radiation
occurs with upper ultra violet and higher frequency radiation. Cell phones use
frequencies that are well below visible and infrared light. One case is not
sufficient to prove a link as his problems might have been caused by something
else. If cell phones did cause the problem, there should be some indication of
increasing incidence of this sort of thing since the mid 80s, when cell phones
started being used or even earlier since hand held transmitters were used for
decades earlier.
