This is what I'm wondering also. By definition, search is
locating something from different sources. Unix, for
example, has been searching for information from files on
the local disk and the local network for decades. Extending
that beyond the LAN to include search engine results or
email seems like obvious and trivial next steps. The fact
that other implementations, such as Google's own "Google
Desktop"(2004), were independently developed lends credence
to that, especially since there was no reference
implementation based on this patent prior to those
publications. In addition to prior art, is there a chance of
reconsidering the validity of this patent from a standpoint
of novelty?[ Reply to This | Parent | # ]

As others mentioned, it sure sounds similar to the recent Ubuntu integration of
Amazon search results into the local search.
Claim 2 also sounds a lot like the feature Google has in trial right now that
shows gmail and Google Drive search results along side regular search results
(http://thenextweb.com/google/2012/10/15/google-expands-trial-for-
including-gmail-results-in-search-box-now-includes-google-drive-as-well/)[ Reply to This | Parent | # ]
