It is a well known fact that Windows RT comes complete with a copy of Microsoft
Office. What more could the average computer user need?
Apparently, there are a few drawbacks. The early devices will only have it
partially working. It will be upgraded in the usual way... some time next year.
I heard another minor drawback mentioned. The RT version is not licensed for use
in commercial, non-profit, or revenue-generating activities.
So, you cannot use it in the office, to take work home, help out at your local
charity or publicise your garage sale. But, other than that, the uses are
endless!
On the other hand, some folk might want a notebook at half the price. The
notebook comes with keys that move whereas the $100 surface cover/keypad is a
flat sheet. The bumpy key version is even more expensive.
There will be a vast range of apps that will work on the RT Surface. Well, there
will when the app developers save up the money for the development tools. Oh
yes, the SDK won't be available to them for a while, yet.
I think I need to get one of those mini-tents so that I can join the launch day
queue the night before.

The confusion in what Windows RT can do appears deliberate. This should
bring
record returns.[ Reply to This | Parent | # ]

Based on the popularity of the Windows phone, I was
originally thinking the
Surface should at least do as well
as that - maybe grabbing as much as 2% of
the market. Then
upon further thought, the tablet market is only a fraction
of
the smart phone market. Everybody needs a phone, but how
many actually buy
tablets? I don't have one yet. So I was
thinking we can't be so optimistic as
my estimate above, and
now I am thinking their sales may be numbered in the
thousands, optimistically. I think the Kin phones did
thousands, and the
Surface will be just as good or even
better, so it may even outsell the Kin1
and Kin2. [ Reply to This | Parent | # ]
