A Junk Patent - a long history of prior art
Authored by: tiger99 on Thursday, October 18 2012 @ 01:12 PM EDT
In the intended context, it is an unreliable and useless technique, as the magnetic signature depends on the relative orientation of the two devices, and every other bit of metal that is around. To make any sense at all out of the inevitable noise, you need a lot of processing power, constantly, which impairs battery life.

Bluetooth itself is problematic enough, when people insist on leaving it on. Every time I drive through London, at least once the car radio is interrupted and announces something like "please enter the PIN code displayed on the radio into your phone", because some idiot has left their bluetooth on and it is looking for something to pair with. Discovering devices by other methods is only going to add to the problem.

What is wrong with plugging in a micro USB OTG lead? It only happens when you know that you want to comminicate between the two devices, so it is much more secure, and also very much faster. Pandering to people's laziness by introducing worthless new gimmicks which cause additional problems is not a good idea.

True, but they're not patenting the *instrument* either.

(Personally, the fact that it's a software patent is enough for me to consider
it invalid, but that's no reason to inaccurately claim it is attempting to
patent something completely different than what the patent itself states.)
