They [Google] have the number one search engine, but they don't try
to prevent other search engines from using their results ...
Not
so sure about that. (I am opining based on less data than I would like so any
solid info about this would be welcome.)
For a long time I was using the now
defunct Scroogle search engine (click for a
"thanks for the memories type page) which scraped Google's results. I got
conflicting impressions about the extent to which Google helped or blocked them.
Scroogle's (ex)operator is now blaming Google for Scoogle no longer being in
operation. (see previous link) I am now mostly using Ixquick which is a "meta search engine"
using the results from several search engines, including Google. It's sister
site, Startpage is supposed to be purely Google results. But unklike Scrooge,
my impression is Ixquick/Startpage has a commercial relationship withe Google
for using its results. I wonder if the same isn't true for Dogpile. [ Reply to This | Parent | # ]

So that's
why they didn't seed their results to prove bing was trawling them?
I'm sure
they difference here was that ms was trawling google's results and claiming them
as their own as opposed to using google each and every time (and giving credit
for if) [ Reply to This | Parent | # ]
