This is where the problem really starts. At the top of the
mercury column you do not have a vacuum. You have a space
filled with mercury vapour at the pressure determined by the
temperature of the mercury. If you heat the column the
column will fall until the boiling point of mercury is
reached. There are no absolutes in this world. I suppose
mathematical ideas have a precise definition, which is
reality is never achieved, but mathematics is very useful in
predicting what will happen in various situation in this
world. However when looked at in extreme detail all is not
as it seems, real precision does not exist. There are
limits to accuracy of real measurement. I suppose that in
the same way although legal ideas have a theoretical
precision, in reality judges use common sense to interpret
the law to meet the current situation. This interpretation
will be tempered by scientific ideas, political ideas, and
perhaps common sense ideas all being balanced to provide a
balanced outcome that the majority of people will accept.
There ar no absolutes in real life!
