Combining particular hardware with software to achieve bizarre behavior like making your hard drive 'walk' -- that might be patentable.

I doubt it. There's prior art from thirty years ago embodied in the "Robin Hood and Friar Tuck" episode that Motorola reportedly unleashed on the support people at Xerox. (The story is possibly apocryphal, but entertaining nonetheless.)
