(let's leave 3D printers out of it for the moment and just
talk about "regular" digital creations).
The problem as I see it is that most of our current rewards
system is tied to the number of "copies sold", for something
that costs nothing to copy. The financial rewards are not
coupled to the amount of effort or knowledge required to
create the work. They aren't even that closely tied to how
useful the work is, just to public tastes. Look at top 40
radio, network TV, Hollywood, or the NY Times bestseller
list for an indication of how well our current system
rewards the best and most creative minds - basically not at
all. Instead, we get extremely mediocre fare that are
finely attuned by sophisticated marketing research to appeal
to as many people as possible (and often the lowest common
denominator).
Remember, copyright (at least according to the US
constitution) is a purely pragmatic deal - it is allowed
only to "promote the progress of useful arts". Copyright
exists to benefit the public, NOT to benefit authors. If the
public is better off with unrestricted copying than with
copyright, then the justification for copyright does not
exist.
As for what would happen if copyright were abolished, no one
really knows. However, writing and music existed for
centuries before anyone ever thought of passing laws against
copying. Perhaps governments or universities would subsidize
authors, or wealthy patrons would commission works, as in
the time of Haydn and Mozart. But I can't see any
justification for assuming that creativity would cease if
unlimited digital reproduction became legal.[ Reply to This | Parent | # ]

I create because that is what I do. That I get paid for it never ceases to
amaze me.
Shrugs.

How are you planning to provide access to
