It's easy to find new comments

'I learned, many years ago, to select "newest first" and
"flat".'

Newest first and flat are not the answer. Most comments are in off-topic
threads. If I do flat, few on-topic comments are somewhere in the middle of all
those linux ones. Plus you do not get to see what these people answer to.

If I could choose a thread and then show only that thread comments as flat or
nested, that would be fine. But that feature does not work.

If I use the flat option, the last comment shown on the page is the comment
named "How does Google have a corner on Internet-Search? Sick Joke?"
from October 13 2012.

October 13 is not the last time somebody commented on this article. For example,
look for the "Linus Torvalds on Innovation (Slashdot)" from October
15.

Maybe the problem is that sorting does not work correctly.
