Those are good points. Will the workaround accept user input from a serial
terminal? If so there is the possibility of a small microcontroller being fitted
externally (even inside a DB9 plug) to issue the appropriate commands
automatically. I don't know if future systems will have a serial port. Of
course, PS/2 ports are disappearing fast, and USB is very unlikely to be usable
at boot time. In server farms they also seem to have some kind of device,
either on the motherboard or external, which can recover a completely crashed
system via the network. I don't know exactly how it works, but have had to rely
on one a few times when I was running a web site on a dedicated server and
messed up the OS. I expect that the Linux Foundation will be addressing the
problems, if they have not done so already. But I feel confident that ultimately
someone, probably the EU, will come down very hard, again, on M$ and their
associates. Considering a recent Newspick, Contribution of open source to Europe's economy: 450 billion
per year, they can't afford to allow FOSS to be locked out of
anything. Actually, I am thinking that 450 billion must come somewhere near to
matching the losses incurred each year by using Monopolyware.... [ Reply to This | Parent | # ]
