Yeah I'm not suggesting burn everything and jump onto the WP7 ship was a good
strategy. Particularly when there's a year between "burn everything"
and actually releasing the new handset.[ Reply to This | Parent | # ]

Of course, Symbian was not winning. It was on a downward
slope. Also, there is no guarantee that Meego would
succeed.
But, a company of Nokia's size cannot strategically bet the
farm on ANY single strategy, specially one relying on an OS
with such a minuscule market presence. Nobody is that smart
to absolutely KNOW what will win and what will fail in the
marketplace. Besides, when Elop made his infamous "Burning
Platform" declaration, Symbian was still the largest market
percentage (although on a steep decline), and he had NOTHING
to take its place immediately.
Even if his Microsoft WP strategy had succeeded, he will be
one of many. Everybody would be making Win Phones, so no
advantage.
Smart companies do what Samsung (and others) do: You keep
many avenues for success. Samsung, for example, has 4 OS
they support. It just happens that consumers want Android
phones, but a responsible management would make sure the
company does not live or die solely on that fact. [ Reply to This | Parent | # ]
