Whilst I don't recognise that the deluge of IP enforcement
is a benefit to society, I do recognise the need to put food
on the table.
My own job (developing software) doesn't really benefit
society much, and also pays more than a lot of more socially
useful jobs.
The problem I have is that I believe IP laws in their
current form are actively harmful to society, and yet they
are enforced on society.
If I write bad software, I get fired, or nobody buys it.
It's simple and self correcting.
Bad laws (and aggressive enforcement) are something that are
enforced on everyone. There's no choice, and they are not
self correcting on a small timescale - especially when
entrenched interests are involved.
I had assumed you were speaking hypothetically about the
incentives of attacking someone using copyright law rather
than patent law, rather than describing your position.
I wasn't intending to criticize you directly (though I
understand how it reads), but rather the society that
financially encourages people to act in ways that don't
benefit it. This
seems to be a big issue in legal and financial industries,
though it is obviously an issue in other trades also (ie.
why don't we pay firefighters, nurses or teachers what we
pay developers?)
Thanks for your fs ck suggestion, I'll certainly bear it in
