star trek transporter is illegal
Authored by: red floyd on Thursday, October 11 2012 @ 02:11 PM EDT
Technically, no, on any counts.

1. The original series said that it creates a "Dirac Jump", which is
technobabble, but it implies that the original is moved.
2. It's also referred to as converting matter to energy and back. Again, no
copy is made.
3. If, you consider (2) to be making a copy, note that the original is
destroyed.

Absolutely! Even if the original is "destroyed".

And unauthorized = illegal. They did argue that in Court followed by the Judge corrected them on their misconception.

Or are you talking real life Law affect? In which case, since teleporter technology doesn't exist (as far as Humans know) it's a non-issue ;)

star trek transporter is legal
Authored by: Ian Al on Friday, October 12 2012 @ 05:43 AM EDT
Or rather, it will be legal when it happens in the future. The creative
expression has not, at the time of making my comment, been fixed in the medium
and is not protected by copyright.

When the magazine gets transported, either the original licensed magazine is
transported along with the licensee, or, if it is a new magazine and a new
person, it is covered by the First Sale principle.

Software Patents: It's the disclosed functions in the patent, stupid!
