Not during takeoff or landing
Authored by: tiger99 on Tuesday, October 09 2012 @ 08:17 AM EDT
Good point, but probably not. As far as I know, airlines have banned smoking in
many parts of the world, so fixed signs rather than the lamps are appropriate.
But the spineless, utterly ineffective FAA, always subject to outside pressure,
have largely caved in over the problem of interference from electronic devices,
and the European JAA are likely to follow. Some airlines are already allowing
phones to be used. Only a matter of time till the first crash....

A few months ago, I had a few flights on Delta. They offer WiFi service (at a
price I was not prepared to pay) to passengers. So, it would appear at least
one other airline is allowing electronic devices. I'm still in the habit of
turning off my phone when flying. However, I have seen tablets being used by
waiters in a restaurant for showing the menu, taking orders etc.

I always get amused by this. As if all the terrorists needed to do is leave
their phone on to cause major issues.

If that was the case, then either we'd have a lot more incidents, or maybe the
terrorists aren't the ones in the turbans and funny accents?

I've already seen the "No electronic devices" in place of the "No
Smoking" lamp on a bunch of newer planes on US carriers (since all intra-US
flights have been completely non-smoking for well over a decade).
