... my choice of strings would be very clear. I wish I knew what software the
manufacturers of things that I do actually buy are using, so I could make
informed decisions about them too. Maybe someone, somewhere, has the capability

I know a web hosting hosting company with a similar experience. They have
exactly 0 Windows machines in the entire company -- not just servers, but the
support staff, accounting department, anywhere. They were told the same thing,
"you can't run a business without Windows" to which the owner of the
company famously (infamously?) replied "Watch me"
