Not during takeoff or landing
Authored by: JamesK on Tuesday, October 09 2012 @ 08:23 AM EDT
I have often wondered how severe that problem is. As it is, banning use of
electronic equipment during take off & landing is still a good idea, as
those are the most critical parts of the flight.

... I should have said that the real danger is mostly phones and tablets which use cellular networks. WiFi and bluetooth are very much less of a problem, and other devices with no intended RF emissions even less so. The uncommanded manoeuvers which happened on certain aircraft were caused by phones, every time.

However, when radio navigation aids are in use, there is some risk of low level emissions from most types of electronics corrupting the received signal, and the same for voice communications too. Fortunately increasing CPU performance puts the clock frequency typically well above the aircraft navigation and voice communication bands, but I wonder when GPS, which most airlines use now, will begin to be affected.
