That puzzled me too!
Perhaps those numbers include variations in firmware for different regions and
maybe network-specific customisations too - it doesn't seem plausible that they

Relatively standard practice is to have a different model number for each
variation. So eg. a model 357 networked printer might come in several different
models: 357n (wired network only), 375w (wireless network only), 357nw (wired
and wireless combined. It might also come with variations for Postscript vs. PCL
and the amount of RAM installed. I can easily see a phone having a lot of
variations, each with it's own unique model number within a general model
family: radio settings for each region/country, which bands it supports, how big
an SD card it's got installed. Likely there's also variations for each carrier,
since they'll want slightly different things burned into the factory default
settings and they'll definitely want it SIM-locked to only them, plus possibly a
generic unlocked model. It wouldn't surprise me to find that that "350 models"
figure was really "20 or so different configurations each of 17 different basic

..if you do the math on Samsung's 221,000 total staff, they
dumped an average of 72 man-years into each of the fabled
350 models in six months.
