350 models in six months?!
Authored by: Anonymous on Monday, October 08 2012 @ 12:22 PM EDT
That puzzled me too!

Perhaps those numbers include variations in firmware for different regions and
maybe network-specific customisations too - it doesn't seem plausible that they
would have that rate of unique hardware models.

Relatively standard practice is to have a different model number for each variation. So eg. a model 357 networked printer might come in several different models: 357n (wired network only), 375w (wireless network only), 357nw (wired and wireless combined. It might also come with variations for Postscript vs. PCL and the amount of RAM installed. I can easily see a phone having a lot of variations, each with it's own unique model number within a general model family: radio settings for each region/country, which bands it supports, how big an SD card it's got installed. Likely there's also variations for each carrier, since they'll want slightly different things burned into the factory default settings and they'll definitely want it SIM-locked to only them, plus possibly a generic unlocked model. It wouldn't surprise me to find that that "350 models" figure was really "20 or so different configurations each of 17 different basic phones".

..350 models in six months by how many of Samsung's R&D
guys?

..if you do the math on Samsung's 221,000 total staff, they
dumped an average of 72 man-years into each of the fabled
350 models in six months.

..the math (assumes 2000 work hours per year):
arnt@celsius:~$ qalc 221000*1000h/350
(221000 * (1000 * hour)) / 350 = approx. 631.42857 kh
arnt@celsius:~$ qalc 221000*1000h/350 to years
(221000 * (1000 * hour)) / 350 = approx. 72.03155 years

..ditto math for Apple's 6 iPhone models since 2004:
arnt@celsius:~$ qalc 60400*16000h/6
(60400 * (16000 * hour)) / 6 = approx. 161.06667 Mh
arnt@celsius:~$ qalc 60400*16000h/6 to years
(60400 * (16000 * hour)) / 6 = approx. 18.374021 kiloyears

..ditto math for Apple's 15 iOS item models since 2004:
arnt@celsius:~$ qalc 60400*16000h/15
(60400 * (16000 * hour)) / 15 = approx. 64.426667 Mh
arnt@celsius:~$ qalc 60400*16000h/15 to years
(60400 * (16000 * hour)) / 15 = approx. 7.3496083 kiloyears

..and Samsung may have done more than these fabled
350 models in those six months, e.g. cameras, laptops,
iPhone displays, etc, etc ... ;o)
