What was really odd
Authored by: Anonymous on Wednesday, October 03 2012 @ 11:47 PM EDT

Was getting this message on my non-windows systems, and being asked
to download and run an .EXE file...

That was back when the scams first started. Possibly they've gotten more
sophisticated since then. Of course if Microsoft used a proper security
model this wouldn't be an issue (though I've been seeing a lot of Mac stuff
recently that looks like a variation on the same scam).

Just a "statistical" 'cold call'
Authored by: Anonymous on Thursday, October 04 2012 @ 07:07 AM EDT
I receive land line telephone calls occasionally (only one
recently yesterday but, periodically, quite
frequently in any one week) purporting to be actually
from Microsoft Windows support (yesterday - first time said
from "Bushey" here in the UK - although, obviously, with an
Indian accent). I was sitting in front of my Linux box as
she said they'd had reports that I had downloaded ... blah,
blah). Unfortunately, their 'script' does not usually allow
them to deviate to answer simple tech questions - they just
want to get you to that Windows Start button (they even tell
you where it is!) to get to your logs.

It is clear they do not have any information about your
computer - just a tel no. and assume you have MS Windows -
statistically the best guess - and have a Windows way to
show you how much rubbish goes through your logs.

By being quite dumb and following exactly what one lady
asked (reading slowly off the screen as I did so) I managed
to get to her 'line manager' who got frustrated when I
slowly tried to get info back from him and said "You and
your computer can go to Hell!" Seems that since I started
using Linux over a decade ago it seems "Windows" support has
really gone downhill.
