Their timing was right...

Well, it's not about customers, or if they are happy. It's about revenue and nothing else.

What benefits does the Lightning connector have for users? You can put it no matter what side in. (Actually, you might have problems pulling out it's USB side, but as we know, Apple is pure quality, so it's right, the Lightning cable is so holy, you shall reserve it an exclusive USB port and buy a new one for each and every place where you need it too.)

Beside this, Lightning seems to do nothing what MicroUSB+MHL is not capable of.

OTOH, the benefits for Apple are huge, because they've embedded an authentication chip, only authorized cables will work with the iPhone 5, at least for the moment. And even if somebody reverse engineers it, Apple has been known to be sue happy.

Micro USB is not without problems
Authored by: Anonymous on Thursday, October 04 2012 @ 06:42 AM EDT
It is completely standard within Europe (I think possibly
even by law), which is a good thing, however the standard is
not without problems.

1) There is no analogue audio or video output

2) Not good for video connections

3) Standard USB points do not supply enough power for many
tablets, meaning they charge slowly or not at all (which is
why they often ship with a high power USB

4) Physical design of the connector is weak. Cables and
sockets wear out at a faster rate, and are not as securely
attached as some of he proprietary offerings.

1 & 2 may not be important for many people, but do limit
potential accessory and dock combinations.

I can't tell you how many micro USB connectors have gone
wobbly on my devices and cables, whilst my GFs iphone
connector remains secure due to the latching on mechanism.

I *hate* proprietary connectors, but I wish the USB ones
were better.
