...but they made the mistake of assuming people would be happy
with Yet Another Proprietary Connector, rather than the soon-
to-be-ubiquitous Micro USB.
Here at work, we often borrow other people's chargers if our
phones are going flat. It used to be a nightmare, trying to
find another charger that would work with your phone. Now
it's a simple as asking the person at the next desk.

Not terribly likely. The USB micro connector on most phones is only capable of
device mode, not host mode. Also, even if they do support host mode, you need a
full-fledged USB device at the other end of the cable, which raises the cost of
the accessory.
The beauty of the old 30-pin dock connector was that it allowed someone to get a
raw audio/video signal that didn't need any additional processing, or hardware,
to access.
I'm not familiar enough with what is required to set up a connection for the
Lightning connector at the moment, but the dynamic pin-out has the potential to
allow for quite a bit of functionality in this manner.[ Reply to This | Parent | # ]
