Hmmm...

Like the guy in London, actually not even involved in the protest, who was
attacked and killed by a policeman as he walked away.

My point was really that the police have a (genuine) fear of attack, which sadly
means they often get their retaliation in first.

If the situation is as you describe, then it sounds like a clear case of
"assault by police officer" :-(
