A few years ago the EU noted model-specific proprietary chargers were a source
easily avoided e-waste. The EU mandated that cell phones must use a common
charger.
A few models were already using micro-USB, so the EU selected micro-USB. (I
suspect it was so that no one had an early advantage, but micro-USB is claimed
to be much better with insertion count life, so there was at least a nominal
technical basis for the selection.)
This was a mandate for phones sold in the EU, not a suggestion.
I'm not quite certain how Apple not only managed to continue using a proprietary
connector, but even introduced a new proprietary connector.[ Reply to This | Parent | # ]

Can Apple be so greedy as to fear someone may buy a charger from someone else?
A charger whose cost to manufacture is but a small percentage of the cost of the
phone. [ Reply to This | Parent | # ]
