NVIDIA to offer up documentation for Tegra graphics core to prove its commitment to open-source
Authored by: Anonymous on Monday, September 24 2012 @ 06:40 AM EDT
It's been a few months since Linus Torvalds got verbal about NVIDIA's support for the semi-eponymous OS, prompting the chip-maker to say "supporting Linux is important to us." Proving that its word is good, NVIDIA will be releasing programming documentation for its Tegra architecture graphics core.

Have Apple Made a Huge Mistake In Starting the Patient War?
Authored by: dobbo on Monday, September 24 2012 @ 09:38 AM EDT

Okay, so Apple v. Samsung is going back for some kind of a do over. Not surprised by that, whichever side lost was there was likely to be an appeal, more so if it was Samsung. But we also have Motorola Mobility starting the processes of stopping Apple selling it's products over patient infringement claims, and I wouldn't be a bit surprised to find that Google has some other patients waiting for their turn.

Could we get to the point where it is all but impossible to sell a smartphone in the US because of injunctions against them? What is that going to do to the US smartphone market? And how is that going to effect Apple?

The figures I've seen show that Android is the most popular platform worldwide.

iPhones are top line smartphones that come with a high purchase cost. Also iOS runs on a very small number of platforms, so a block in the richest market where it has the largest penetration (US) is likely to have a big impact on how Apple target their R&D dollars, and therefore innovation or iOS, iPhone, and iPad.

As I see it Android is not so effected. Many of the Android powered smartphone producers are not US centric (as Apple is). So long as there is a market which can fund innovation (via the more expensive models - Europe or Asia maybe), and mass volume markets were older models still have a profitable life there is plenty to keep innovation going.

When the US finally get back to having a vibrant smartphone market will Apple (and iPhone) be so far behind the curve that it has lost it's edge to Android?

The shine is off the Apple
Authored by: DCFusor on Monday, September 24 2012 @ 12:04 PM EDT
They only sold half the whistper number on Wall Street, and their stock is starting to fall. This is going to be an epic short, if put on at the right time. Every hedge fund and mutual fund on the planet is in this trade, long. When they all go for the very crowded exit ramp at the same time, anytime now - it's going to be amusing.

Apple is in the hedge fund motel - like roaches that can't get out. Who's going to buy a falling knife when they all want to sell at once? Yes, I'm a trader...

Judge rules Rambus destroyed evidence in case against Hynix - The patent troll legend grows
Authored by: Anonymous on Monday, September 24 2012 @ 07:30 PM EDT
Judge Ronald Whyte of the US District Court of the Northern District of California ruled that Rambus destroyed records that could have been used in the lawsuit between Rambus and Hynix. According to Hynix, Judge Whyte's ruling could limit any royalties it might have to pay Rambus for infringing its patents.

Despite Judge Whyte's ruling, he said Rambus' patents are still valid and that the firm could collect royalties. However he said in his ruling that the destruction of evidence, "should preclude [Rambus] from entitlement to a royalty that places Hynix at a competitive disadvantage".

Open-access deal for particle physics - Consortium brokers agreement with 12 journals
Authored by: Anonymous on Tuesday, September 25 2012 @ 10:17 AM EDT
The entire field of particle physics is set to switch to open-access publishing, a milestone in the push to make research results freely available to readers.

Particle physics is already a paragon of openness, with most papers posted on the preprint server arXiv. But peer-reviewed versions are still published in subscription journals, and publishers and research consortia at facilities such as the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) have previously had to strike piecemeal deals to free up a few hundred articles.

After six years of negotiation, the Sponsoring Consortium for Open Access Publishing in Particle Physics (SCOAP3) is now close to ensuring that nearly all particle-physics articles — about 7,000 publications last year — are made immediately free on journal websites. Upfront payments from libraries will fund the access.

Apple: The accuser becomes the accused

On the heels of the Apple/Samsung lawsuit, Apple drops IOS 6 on the public. Just like IOS 5, there are plenty of features stolen directly from Android, alleges Jack Wallen.

Oh no! Yet another court case over tablet computers!
Authored by: tiger99 on Tuesday, September 25 2012 @ 11:24 AM EDT
BBC

Toy tablets at that, with rounded corners, but fortunately with sides that are not straight, otherwise I expect Apple would be suing too.

But I have to wonder whether the soft surround is removable, and if so, what shape is the main casing?

Well, if they don't care about anything else, including the law, why should they care about the environment?

But I do wonder why they had to use obviously ancient diesel generators that were belching black smoke. Moderd diesels, at least of the variety sold in the EU, are very clean.

apple maps - OpenMap licence?
Authored by: squib on Tuesday, September 25 2012 @ 02:06 PM EDT
I can not read Japanese so I can't follow this up.

According to the New York Times , much of apple maps
troubles in Japan stem from the taking information
from Open street map Japan that uses a different
geo-grid system. … And possibly
this is the same problem in Europe whose maps do not
use World Geodetic System

My question is: Has apple compiled with the OpenMap licence
and given them full acknowledgment -or have they stolen this
information as well?

Bad Pharma: account of pharmaceutical industry scientific fraud is readable and rigorous
Authored by: Anonymous on Tuesday, September 25 2012 @ 02:10 PM EDT
Drugs are tested by the people who manufacture them, in poorly designed trials, on hopelessly small numbers of weird, unrepresentative patients, and analysed using techniques which are flawed by design, in such a way that they exaggerate the benefits of treatments. Unsurprisingly, these trials tend to produce results that favour the manufacturer.

When trials throw up results that companies don’t like, they are perfectly entitled to hide them from doctors and patients, so we only ever see a distorted picture of any drug’s true effects.
