Low carb diets are (as far as people can tell) healthy.
Probably the medical establishment's biggest failure has
been the promotion of low fat diets. (Originally based on a
paper written by Keys, who omitted half the data and showed
a linear relationship between fat intake and cardiovascular
events. Unfortunately, when all the data was considered,
there was no relationship...in the same data set, the
relationship with sugar intake was clear.) The worst part
about low-fat diets is that people on them compensate by
increasing sugar intake, which is actually bad for you.
Sigh. The guy wasn't a trained statistician - and he
probably successfully killed a few million people with his
research.*
The point about protein consumption is well-taken, but not
an excuse to ignore the health risks of high carbohydrate
diets. My own take on it is that, if you are eating warm-
blooded meat, calorie conversion is quite inefficient and
non sustainable without decreases in world population.
OTOH, insects convert calories quite efficiently (~60-70%).
(I suspect fish can also be efficient.)
My hope is that people will eventually adjust dietary habits
to decrease carbohydrate consumption, with a corresponding
increase in protein consumption and that, as meat prices
increase, we'll move towards some sort of farmed grub.**

*The interesting part is that there's a mortality uptick in
people who lose weight - probably due to low fat diets.
Which, given that most of our cells require lipids,
shouldn't surprise anyone.
**Monkeys eat plenty of grubs. And there's some sort of
relationship between some fatty acids found in fish and
insects and autism. Heck, if you look at nutrient
deficiencies found in vegans and cross-reference to insect
composition, there's a pretty good match.[ Reply to This | Parent | # ]
