My dad can run LibreOffice on his Windows XP partition as a non-admin user; at my brother's home, they can do the same under Windows 7.

In both instances, admin rights were required to install LibreOffice, though.

How Windows is initially set up on a new computer, I wouldn't know; the only computer I have ever got with Windows pre-installed was a (fairly new) second-hand Dell laptop that came with Windows Vista—which I haven't ever booted, since the first thing I did with it, was to start it from a Slackware disk, to zap its partition table with something like the following command:

dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/sda1 bs=512 count=4096

(though I may have specified a different value for the “count” parameter). Next, I created new partitions to install Ubuntu.
