I understand wiping the disk to get rid of sensitive data, although I am partial
to shred(1) (for entire partitions or the entire disk, which avoids the issues
the man page points out for "modern filesystems"). As far as the
other issues you raise ... I believe I have read about Microsoft products
sometimes doing weird things on installation when out-of-date information is on
the disk but I don't remember hearing about any such issues when using reputable
software -- at least if you avoid all versions of the FAT filesystem. (Even
with FAT I think the issues only arise with MS softare but it has been a while
since I have looked at it.) TMK, any Linux distro will install and run just
fine no matter what garbarge was already on the disk at installation time. The
only issue being it might query you whether you wish to make a dual boot or
simply overwrite an OS which is already present.[ Reply to This | Parent | # ]
