According to the article the Judge said he hopes to have a ruling soon. I expect
he wants to research the law and craft and opinion.

Hi,

Most boring cases like 'guy robs a dairy' or 'driver drives
drunk' are really easy to rule correctly and the judge does
it there and then. I think it's called ruling from the
bench, but I'm not sure

Whenever the judge wants to get it 100% right, _OR_ (I'm
guessing more likely) the judge wants to present clear and
simple reasoning that they don't want to have to come up
with on the spot, the judge 'reserves' their decision.

This effectively delays the decision, usually by a week or
two.

I think when Dotcom had the judge who knew this subject well
he was going to have an easy time through the judicial
system, but now he has judges who are more easily swayed by
the government's lawyers it will be harder for him. Also
worth noting that this is a very untested area of law in NZ
and the judge is probably very concerned with getting it
right.
